Cambridge International (IGCSE and A Levels)

The international exam board of the University of Cambridge, UK.

Overview

Cambridge International is the international exam board of the University of Cambridge. Schools choose subjects from a wide range and can combine Cambridge with other boards.

In India these schools are often called "IGCSE schools", after the qualification most students take at around 14 to 16.

Programmes

Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary

Ages 5 to 14. Curriculum frameworks with optional checkpoint tests.

Cambridge IGCSE

Usually taken at ages 14 to 16, around Classes IX and X. Students choose a set of subjects.

Cambridge International AS and A Level

Ages 16 to 19, around Classes XI and XII. AS Level is roughly the first half of an A Level.

How assessment works

  • IGCSE subjects are graded A* to G (some subjects use 9 to 1). A Levels are graded A* to E.
  • Assessment is mostly by written exams set and marked by Cambridge, with coursework or practicals in some subjects.
  • Schools in India can enter students in the March, June or November exam series.

After school: college admissions

  • The Association of Indian Universities recognises passes in five Cambridge IGCSE or O Level subjects, including English Language, as equivalent to Class X.
  • Indian universities accept Cambridge International A Levels to meet entry requirements, but each institution sets its own criteria, including the number of A Level subjects.
  • For NEET-UG, students need A Levels in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, plus AS Level English.
  • Cambridge says its qualifications are recognised by universities and employers in India and worldwide.

Choosing a Cambridge school: what to check

  • Ask which subjects the school offers at IGCSE and A Level; the choice varies from school to school.
  • If your child may move to a CBSE or state board school after Class X, check the five-subject rule for IGCSE, including English.
  • For medicine, plan for A Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology plus AS Level English.
  • The Cambridge AICE Diploma is not separately recognised in India, according to Cambridge.
