How to read a school fee structure, charge by charge

Tuition is only part of the bill. How to turn a school's fee structure into one yearly figure you can compare.

A school’s “fee” is rarely one number. Tuition is only part of the bill, and the way schools split their charges varies widely. Here is how to read a fee structure so you can compare schools fairly and plan the full year’s cost.

The charges you will usually see

  • Tuition fee. The core charge, often quoted monthly or quarterly.
  • Annual or development charges. Collected once or twice a year for maintenance, activities and upgrades.
  • One-time admission fee. Paid when the child joins. It is not refunded.
  • Security deposit or caution money. Refundable when the child leaves, subject to the school’s rules.
  • Transport. Usually charged separately, often by distance or route.
  • Other charges. Meals, uniforms, books, trips and optional activities, which may or may not be in the school’s published fee.

Work out the real yearly cost

To compare two schools, convert everything into one annual figure for the class your child is joining: tuition for twelve months, plus annual charges, plus transport. Keep one-time charges separate, because they matter in the first year only.

If your school is in Delhi

Under Section 17(3) of the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, every school must file a full statement of its fees with the Directorate of Education before each academic session. Private schools built on land allotted by the DDA or other government agencies on the condition that fees are regulated also need the Directorate’s prior approval before raising fees. The Directorate publishes its fee orders on its website.

Always ask for the fee structure in writing for the exact session you are applying for. Last year’s figures can be out of date by the time you join.

Questions to ask the school

  • Which charges are one-time, which are annual and which are monthly?
  • Is the security deposit refundable, and on what conditions?
  • How is transport charged for your area?
  • What is not included: meals, books, uniforms, trips?
  • How has the fee changed over the last few years?
